Melinda Laszczynski’s solo exhibition “Your Place or Mine” presents an installation of large paintings,
sculpture, digital drawings videos, taking over the space with vibrant colors, large scale and reflective light activating holographic surfaces. Laszczynski’s new work gestures towards site, potential, and the spaces between things. Layers of archaeological digging bridge a delicate balance of chaos and cuteness, tension
and relief. As records of mark making, the works are tracing manipulated impressions you can get lost in
and discover as you move in the space. Resisting depiction in favor of material, Laszczynski pours bright
colors and cannibalized forms from everyday experiences and boldly offers them up as abstractions. She is blurring the relationship between the work and the environment, as the walls and architectural features
themselves are integrated within the installation. Material is of the utmost importance, embedding
information and feeling through alchemical processes that allows your curiosity to sift through and find
reflections of the environment and of the mind.
Melinda Laszczynski (b. Pittsburgh, PA) is a painter in a multi-disciplinary practice based in Houston, TX.
Her work is inspired by confectionery treats rising and falling, bodies pushing against one another, absurd
objects and materials, and new growth pushing through organic forms. She piles layers of texture and color on her tactile and playful pieces until they spill out and fight for air. Laszczynski’s ceramic and paper forms are a balance of alchemy and anticipation, a push and pull between the manipulation and the nature of the materials, holding the memory of manipulation through the touch of hand. Laszczynski graduated with a BFA in Painting from the Cleveland Art Institute in 2010 and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Houston in 2015.
